Men Are Pimps, Women Are Whores
There’s a major double standard when it comes to men and women being promiscuous. A guy who sleeps with many women is considered to be “the man” while a woman who sleeps with a lot of men is considered to be a whore. It seems very unfair how each sex can do the same exact thing and have complete opposite effects on their reputation, but it actually makes plenty of sense.
Now before I get any comments claiming I’m some sort of misogynist, let me just say I’m actually quite a feminist. I believe passionately in complete equal rights between men and women. In fact, I recently found out that chess has a women’s division and thought “why is this not a coed competition? Men and women both have perfectly equal brain capacities. This isn’t like sports where men happen to be physically stronger than women”. That bugs me, as well as women holding “women’s world records” in sports… it’s not a world record if someone else, male or female, has done better.
Anyway, back to why women are called sluts when they’re promiscuous and men aren’t. I think the reason this double-standard exists is because men are so “easy”. If a woman wanted to, she could sleep with just about every guy she wanted to sleep with. There are very few men that would turn a woman down on such an offer. On the flip-side, a man will devote huge portions of his time for the opportunity to sleep with just about any woman that will allow him to. Basically, women have a lot more choices when it comes to choosing a sexual partner than men do.
So since men find it to be such a challenge to find a sexual partner, and women have no trouble at all, it makes total sense that this double standard exists. Women have the luxury of being picky, while guys pretty much take whatever they can get – beggars can’t be choosers. So when a woman doesn’t discriminate amongst who she’s sleeping with, she’s abusing her power of choice. Anyone who abuses a power is considered to be looked at negatively. On the other hand, when one man manages to sleep with a whole bunch of different women while most guys are struggling to sleep with just one, it makes him look talented.
If whole bunch of guys are out fishing, and no one’s catching anything all day except one guy who has a boat full of fish, that guy is considered to be very gifted (or lucky). But if a woman goes to a seafood restaurant and orders almost everything on the menu, she’s considered to be a pig. Everyone loves when the underdog wins and no one wants to see a champion competing against easy opponents over and over, it gets old fast.
Unfortunately, the only solution to this problem would be for all women to be promiscuous, that way men won’t be so impressed with each other every time they sleep with one. This is a terrible solution though, and really there is no need for one. We’ve got a pretty balanced system this way: Women get reputations as being whores if they sleep around, and men can’t get laid. Neither of us has it easy, and neither of us can really complain.
