Stop Cheering at Comedy Shows
It always irritates me when people cheer, whistle, or pretty much do anything besides laugh and clap at a comedy show. It doesn’t make any sense to cheer at a joke, and I think that’s why it strikes me as so strange when people do it.
Let me explain myself:
When you cheer for something, it means you enjoyed whatever it is you’re cheering for. So if you enjoy a joke so much that you can cheer for it, shouldn’t you be laughing instead? You can’t laugh and cheer at the same time, so was it funny or not? You can easily laugh and clap at the same time though, so I’m all for that. If something happens to be extra funny and you want to show the comedian how much you appreciated the joke, you’re already laughing, so by all means clap away.
I’m not even going to get into people standing up and dancing at a comedy show, the list of reasons for why that’s ridiculous could break the Internet. But if you catch yourself cheering for a comedian, just ask yourself why you’re not laughing if it was such a great joke.
